State Sen.'Virgil Goode from Rocky Mont is running as an alternative to Sen. Robb who is untainted by scandal, fiscally conservative, and most likely to defeat Col. North. : In an appearance at Montpelier this weekend he said that :Democrats must not be complacent about polls showing ^North’s lack of general popularity. He said Col. North is much stronger than he appears in polls.
Nancy Spannaus, a follower of Lyndon LaRouche, is the third challenger to Sen. Robb in the race. • Sen. Robb has a large campaign fund, statewide name .recognition, and would appear to be most likely to win the Iprimary. However, many voters are alienated by stories of this activities while governor in attending parties at Virginia Beach where drugs were used and young women were willing to entertain him, by his vote to confirm Judge Thomas, and by his support for Pres. Clinton’s policy of opening military service to homosexuals.
With candidates representing a variety of the spectrum in the Democratic Party, many voters should be able to find someone to vote for in this primary. Of course, with all registered voters eligible to vote, it is also possible for Col. North’s supporters to enter the Democratic primary to vote for the candidate they think their man can most easily defeat. : And before the polls close, there will probably be two more candidates declared for the fall election. Former state Attorney General Marshall Coleman may enter as an independent appealing to Republicans who cannot support Col. North, and former Governor Douglas Wilder may enter as an independent appealing to Democrats who cannot support Sen. Robb. The largest question may well be what Wilder will do if Sen. Robb does not win the primary, but that is a question we may never know the answer to.
