The central character ol A Perfect Balance is Sandy, portrayed by Kevin Reese, a highly-imaginative artist, who goes off in search of his masterpiece. Set in his studio, the play follows Sandy’s many experiments to capture in his art what fascinates him most in the world— movement. Reese creates drawings, paintings and sculptures on stage, some of which become characters to accompany Sandy in his struggle with the creative process. A circus ring-master, a high-flying trapeze artist, and the troublesome Monsieur Critique all give physical life to the voices inside Sandy as he moves toward his discovery of the mobile.

The play is a fantasy inspired by the spirit of play and invention in many of the works of Alexander Calder. It is intended as a tribute to Calder’s innovation—indeed to all artists’ triumphs and traumas along the road to creating something new.

The production was written and directed by Mary Hall Surface, internationally-recognized author of fifteen plays for family audiences.
