School Superintendent David Gangel told the Board of Supervisors Monday he had a rude shock when bids were opened for upgrading the sewage system at the elementary school.
The engineering firm Dewberry and Davis that has been Working with the school system in developing specifications for the project had estimated that the project should cost about $160,000. Instead the low bid received last Thursday was $279,000, Dr. Gangel reported.
He said the engineering firm was negotiating with the firm with the low bid to see if it could be reduced.
School Board Chairman Beverly Massie said the School Board is “very concerned” about the situation. She said she did not know if the engineering firm was at fault for its estimate, if the bidding firms were just not very interested in doing the project and so had bid high or if they believed a government entity could be forced to pay a premium price.
In the evening session of the supervisors meeting incumbent School Board member Bryant Lee nominated himself for another short term on the board representing Hampton District. He was the only nominee from the district and thus will get the new term which runs from July 1 through the end of December. * From Wakefield District Wayne
