A native son of Rappahannock County who achieved distinction in Seattle, Washington, will be honored in Woodville on Saturday, June 10.
A memorial service beginning at noon on the 10th at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Woodville will honor Joseph Franklin “Pops” Warner, who passed away in his sleep at his residence in Seattle on March 22.
Mr. Warner was born Sept. 30, 1916 in Rappahannock County, the ninth and youngest child of the late John Daniel and Homie Caroline Warner. He received his early education ^t the Scrabble School on Route 626,-two miles south of Woodville, 3ndC attended high school at C hristiansburg Industrial Institute in ^hrvstiansburg, Va. In 1940, he enrolled at Morgan State University, Baltimore, Md., on a full athletic scholarship. His fellow football playi ers nicknamed him “Pops” after the

j Warner. He left Morgan State in June 1942 to join the 1J.S. Navy during World War II.
Most of Mr. Warner’s Navy career was spent in Seattle, where he chose to remain after his discharge in 1946, as a first class petty officer and diesel mechanic.
