Sperryville hire Chief,Kichie Burke said his company already covers miles of Route 231 and U.S. 522. “A fire doubles in size every five to 10 minutes," he said.
He noted that volunteers are aging and few younger people are coming in. “There are a lot of farmers here who can volunteer," he said. “These people are getting tired.”
Many volunteers described the difficult time they have with fundraising. They reported that they usually get more support from people who don't live in the county than they get from local residents.
Several people opposed the special fire levy. They urged the Board of Superv isors to find the .money for the fire departments in the general county budget. Robert Dennis said, “I would rather see the increase in the tax rate. I’m concerned about the creation of a special fund. Special funds take on a mind of their own. They become entitlements." He said he would support the general increase and the increase in personal property taxes, but the fire tax on fair market rates would be “taxing trees and cows."
Chris Parrish agreed saying a special tax would lead to more bureaucracy.
