embarrassments are the product of a writer’s boredom. Here the writer had written a string of simple, indicative sentences. She wanted to break the monotony. Her idea was sound, but her remedy was horrid.

These things happen with depressing frequency. A staff reporter for The Buffalo News covered a drug bust last November. “Wrapped in a lunch bag and hidden under a stairwell, police said they found 2.5 ounces of cocaine.”

If the cops indeed were wrapped in a lunch bag, there were out of uniform. And why were they hiding under a stairwell?

An introductory phrase or clause must modify the proper subject. Otherwise, a healthy sentence turns into hash.
