Ron Frazier said taxes generally are too high and the supervisors should fund the increase for the fire and rescue squads by “spending cuts” . in other parts of the budget.
Alex Sharp said he had been very happy to see the fire and rescue squads come when he called them. He said the Rappahannock Farmers’ Association supports the increase in funding but opposes establishing a separate tax and recommends the increase “come out of the general fund.”
Ron Makela said unless something is done now to help the local companies the county will “be forced to go to a paid service. A small tax increase now can avoid a substantial tax increase later.”
Doug McCabe supported that sentiment. He said that Prince William was facing having to go to a completely paid force, but a fire levy had prevented that. He said the fire tax in Prince William was saving over $30 million in the cost of a paid fire and rescpe services.
