Bill Fletcher suggested the county study the issue more and in the meantime take the money out of the general fund before setting up a separate fund.
Walter Longyear agreed with Mr. Miller. “I think taxes are too high,” he said. “Every dollar you tax me is a dollar I can’t spend on my family.”
Following the public hearing members of the board expressed their opinions.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie noted this was one part of the budget not mandated by state or federal laws. He said, “I would hate to see them (the fire and rescue companies) lose ground.”
