The director of this production, Donald Hicken, says that for him, as perhaps for many of the “liberally educated,” Emily Dickinson existed for many years as an American literary institution — a lover of nature who wrote at a time when loving nature meant glorifying it. “In our era,” he continues, “a nature lover is one dedicated to rescuing it and 1 was guilty of seeing Miss Dickinson’s work as out of sync with the contemporary struggle. The great debt that 1 owe to the process of work on The Belle of Amherst is the lesson that I’ve learned from Emily’s life and from her profound insight into human nature. With the savoring of her poetry comes a knowledge gained through simplicity and candor; and empathy with a life of pain and joy, fear and security, loss and life — all seen from that tiny bedroom window that gave forth so much light.”
