Land users should address the long-term negative effects of farm ponds prior to adding such amenity to their property. As the watersheds of our region become more developed and vegetation is removed from stream banks by livestock, river and stream sedimentation will surely ensue. More importantly, unless we make a commitment to restore streamside vegetative buffer areas that reduce sedimentation and increase filtration of nutrient runoff, a farm ponds will need expensive sediment dredging and bank shaping in order to maintain its intended use.

The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District assists agricultural landowners to implement soil and water conservation practices. The District provides technical and financial assistance to agricultural landowners who want to enhance vegetative buffer areas along streams and to provide sources of drinking water for livestock other than from ponds, rivers and streams. In fact, during the past year the District has allocated over $300,000 to farmers tQ do these and other soil and water conservation practices. The District may provide cost-share and technical assistance.
