increase in personal property taxes and the rest should come out of the general fund. He said the county had made a commitment to people who had put their land in agricultural and forestal districts or donated scenic easements that in exchange they could get land use taxation. He said a separate fire levy on fair market value would “be breaking a promise we made to these people.”
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said he could support Mr. Massie’s approach.
Piedmont District representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes said he would support the increase for the companies but had not yet decided how it should be paid for.
Stonewall-Hawthorn District representative Robert Anderson said he supported Mr. Massie’s approach. “I’d like to see us use the general fund, rather than a fire levy.”
Wakefield District representative and Chairman Hubert Gilkey said he was concerned that using the general fund would draw down the surplus too much making a larger increase necessary next year.
The supervisors will vote on the budget and set the tax rates on June 19.
