Henry Gorfein said he opposed the personal property tax increase. “It’s a regressive tax that hurts people who don’t have much.” He asked if there would be a way to tax only people who don't live in the county year round.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the county couldn’t do that.
Frank Warner said he also supported the personal property tax increase since Rappahannock’s rates are lower than surrounding counties. He suggested the county not enact a special tax and study other ways to raise funds for the fire departments. He said that his church had been able to educate people to contribute more and had been able to eliminate most of the suppers that formerly had supported church activities.
