Mr. Gilkey asked if she w as talking about paid or volunteer members. He said it would not be reasonable to ask a volunteer to come from Chester Gap or Amissville to a central location to respond to a call that might be in Amissville.
J.B. Carter asked if Washington would be willing to give up its fire department because companies in other areas could cover it. He said that national standards expect a response time of 10 minutes. If it takes five minutes to get ready to run a call, the vehicle could only travel another five miles in the next five minutes at 60 miles per hour. He said the county needs seven companies.
Paul Poling said that having fire companies scattered around the county saves many people more in insurance premiums than the tax levy would cost.
