The Broadway play The Belle of Amherst, by William Luce, come to the Theatre at Washington for one performance only at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 17. Tana Hicken, now in her 12th season as a member of the Arena Stage acting company, appears in the play, whose original production on Broadway starred Julie Harris.
The play explores the life of American’s first great poet, Emily Dickinson, from the age of 15 when she was full of hope and success until she died at 56, a recluse with her door closed against society. Emily Dickinson’s life is recreated on stage through excerpts from her poetry and letters. Playing the poet as well as the roles of her father, teacher, and friends, is a tour de force for the performer in this one-woman show .
Tana Hicken has performed The Belle of Amherst in a number of theaters over the past ten years. “Miss Hicken evokes both the emotion and the wit, the joy and the heartbreak, the sense of discovery and the inevitability of loss that made up Emily’s life,” according to The Berkshire Eagle.
