Jesse Pond and Peter White spoke in favor of the concept of protecting water resources at the public hearing on the ordinance. “Keep it simple," Mr. Pond advised.
The planners discussed the public forum held in Chester Gap the week before.
“We heard a lot of requests, some were legitimate needs, all of which would mean big tax increases,” Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Sharon Pierce said. “These are probably what we’ll hear more and more of as the county changes."
Of the request for a senior center, Chairman Mike Massie suggested they use the Washington Fire Hall, which is handicapped accessible.
Mr. McCarthy said some of the concern was about handicapped accessibility, but it was also “an issue of empowerment, a place to call their own. I am not sure it’s resolvable,” he said.
Mr. Massie said, “The identification of the need is important. To resolve that need doesn’t depend on government, but government can be a part of it.”
Werner Krebser, representing Wakefield District which includes Chester Gap, said it was a “big disappointment” to learn that there is no citizens association there. A citizens’ association could purchase some of the lots that are not built on and put recreational facilities on them. “It’s not up to the county to provide these facilities.”
