In its first month, the free English as a Second Language class at Carver/Piedmont has attracted students from seven different countries. Spanish is the first language of the majority but French, Portuguese and Russian are also spoken.
“Their abilities cover a wide range as well,” says teacher Elizabeth Boyd. “One student is very fluent in spoken English but didn’t seriously study reading and writing because he felt he would never need it. Now that he’s married to an American, living here, and wanting to go on with higher education, it’s suddenly very important.”
