More important than knowing the brand name of a computer is knowing the kind of processor the computer has inside. Ask the computer’s owner — it’s usually the only sure way to know. The answer will either be a chip number (386, 486dx2, 68030 or the like) or the answer will be a brand name for the chip (Pentium, Quadra, Power PC).

Buying computer peripherals, such as modems, mice, CD-ROMs and hard drives adds an extra set of problems, namely the kind of socket, port or “bus” that the device plugs into and the style of connecting cable which is required.

If you don’t know the kind of port a computer uses; then consider giving a gif) certificate and allowing the recipient to pick out the right kind of equipment themselves.

Realize that no matter how carefully you research the type of computer gift to give, you may purchase something that simply doesn’t work. Most reputable retail firms allow exchanges as long as all the items — especially the warranty card — are enclosed.

Just remember to keep the receipt handy.
