Though computer equipment and software is a popular choice for holiday gift giving, a little forethought and answers to a few quick questions will save disappointment when that special present is opened.
Perhaps the most important thing to do when buying computer gifts is to not remove the clear plastic “shrink wrap” packaging before giving the gift. Most retailers will not allow returns without the original packaging intact. Cross out the price on the tag with a black marker, leaving the name of the store and the product number or “SKU” clearly visible.
The primary question to ask yourself when buying computer gifts is what kind of computer equipment does the giftee already have? Computers come in two basic flavors —- Mac and PC — and the differences are not always obvious.
With Apple’s Macintosh equipment, look for the following on the box: Mac/OS, the Apple logo or the phrase “Macintosh 11 or higher.” Of special note, regular Mac programs will work in the new Power Macs, but not necessarily the other way around.
