Throughout the year, the RappahannockRapidan Community Services Board feeds more than 100 people a day in Fauquier County, some at home and some at the Shadow Lawn center on Culpeper Street.
“There are lots of needs,” said Irma Peters who works in the Board’s Culpeper office. “During the holidays, loneliness is one of the biggest.”
Would-be angels can adopt one of these senior citizens or families for Christmas by calling Ruth Pavlik at (540) 347-7729.
“Sometimes, what they need more than food is a friendly face,” Mrs. Peters said.
Adopt-A-Family programs are so widespread that a comprehensive list is impossible. The Jaycees offer one, as do many churches. Community Action Inc., also offers an “adoption” program, matching offers with the neediest in their client database.
Through Adopl-A-Family, people are either given the names or the needs of a family to whom they can provide a meal, clothes and Christmas gifts. The emphasis in one Adopt-A-Family program might be on toys for children, but others also provide warm coats and other necessities.
