Thifc longer class periods in block scheduling allow for a greater variety of learning activities and will particularly help with science labs and other projects that take a longer time to complete than the traditional 48minute class.
The proposed schedule extends the school day by 10 minutes. The first class would meet from 8:20-9:50 a.m., starting five minutes before first period does now, and the fourth block would last from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m., ending five minutes than seventh period does now.
The lunch period has been shortened with two shifts between 11:25 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. The lunch shifts would be 25 minutes long with a 10minute overlap. Students would have a 10-minute home room period either before or after lunch.
Mr. Raines said some of his teachers are worried about teaching 90 minute classes, and teachers from a school that has been on a block schedule will be coming in to provide an in-service program.
The School Board also saw Holly Pendleton demonstrate using a computer hooked up to the Internet to search the World Wide Web. Mr. Pendleton said with the government shut down some internet addresses were unavailable and the Internet was operating more slowly.
