es. For Beyer, the Senate split may be a mixed blessing. It will give him a new role as power broker, but may also force him to make crucial votes on some highly charged issues that could come back to haunt him politically. Now in his second term as lieutenant governor, he has been cautious to an extreme as he awaits his turn to seek the opportunity to live in the Executive Mansion.
It is unlikely that either Senator Vigil Goode or Charles Colgan, Democrats who often vote like Republicans, will go over to the GOP side as some hope. But because several conservative Democratic Senators, Hunter Andrews, Frank Nolen and Elmo Cross lost, and several liberal Democrats, Patricia Ticer and Katie Couric’s sister, won, they will find themselves among a Senate Democratic group on the whole considerably more liberal.
Then again such people as Goode and Colgan may be able to get just about anything they want from their feH^w Democratic senators since they will be ticking time bombs able to put the Republican Party instantly in charge if they so desire. As one wag
