Thus if Jim Gilmore, or some other Republican, becomes Virginia’s next Governor, it is probable they will have one or both legislative chambers under GOP control at some point in their term.
But this is no consolation for the Allen forces who put all the money on the pass line and rolled snake eyes. Unless some Democratic Senator can be persuaded to convert, they will return to Richmond in January to face a Democrat-controlled House brimming with hostility and a Senate where Donald Beyer will be the state’s first non-figurehead lieutenantgovernor.
Allen was obviously the elections’ biggest loser. He loses his status as a potential player on the national scene and must now, for the sake of polishing a tarnished image, be nice to those selfsame Democrats he has been so fond of calling arrogant and irresponsible.
