In some ways, the seeming simplicity of Vermeer’s paintings and the narrowness of his subject matter make his works mysterious and hence intriguing beyond their visual appeal. The pictures on view showed three early works of mythology and religion. There were three apparent portrait heads and two town or street scapes. Women appear in all but one of the remaining 23 pictures.* Vermeer focuses on the lives and world of women, mostly of the upper class.
Many of his pictures are interiors of an individual or a group lighted from windows to the left, and the windows are sometimes shown with care. They are of different designs.
