“Sometimes it never heals,” Mr. Bird added, citing the large roads and gullies left by logging equipment. “In some ways, thoughtful logging is thought of as heresy.”
A horse trainer and breeder for two decades, Mr. Bird uses horses known for their work ethic —mainly Belgians and Percherons — in his farm operation. He. has been doing logging on his farm, and for others, for 20 years and, has harvested enough lumber from his woods to build his home, bam and other structures on. the place.
The venture is geared toward landowners who want to remove windblown or diseased trees as well as those who are interested in harvesting valuable trees from their woods every few years.
“They may not make as much money (by selling the trees) individually, but you can always sell more,” ' Mr. Bird said.
