In the ongoing battle over the nation’s funding priorities. Republican Budget Committee Chairman John R. Kasich has said, “We’re going to fund programs we think are important and not fund programs we think are not important,” Apparently, the Republican leadership doesn’t think the Environmental Protection Agency is important.
Last year, congressional Republicans sent President Clinton an EPA budget which would have cut 3,000 to 5,000 employees from the payroll. The President vetoed the measure stating that our ability to protect public health and the environment would be devastated.
Following the second government shutdown, the Republican leadership did not include environmental protection programs in the list of federal activities that should receive funding through the end of the year. Our irreplaceable national parks received annual funding, but EPA programs to
