Col. John Carney
Lt. Col. John “Jack” G. Carney, Jr., died Friday, March 22 in Atlantic Beach, Florida. He was 75 years old.
Bom in Erie, Pennsylvania, Col. Carney attended the University of Pennsylvania, but left to serve in the Army during World War II.
He was initially stationed at the Front Royal Remount Depot in Virginia where he First fell in love both with Rappahannock County and Frances “Tiny” J. Williams, later to be his wife of 50 years. Serving first in India with Mars Task Force, his unit,'attached to Merrill’s Marauders, rode mules 1,200 miles into Burma and on to China. When the war ended, Jack was' assigned to’ the last • advanced horse cavalry class at Fort Riley, Kansas. He and Tiny were married in June of 1946.
Col. Carney made the Army a career, serving First with the 4th Constabulary in Linz, Austria and then with the First Cavalry Division during the war in Korea. After a year in Hokkaido, Japan, he was assigned \ to the Central Intelligence Agency in Europe. After returning stateside with Tiny and their three sons, Crickey,
