Whether its mounds of paper work or unbeatable deadlines, everyone’s job includes duties that he/she would rather not do. For automotive service technicians, one of these is digging through a customer’s personal belongings.
“People forget that we have to get in the trunk and glove compartment for certain jobs,” lamented one technician. “I’ve had a loaded gun fall out of the glove compartment twice. People leave all kinds of personal papers in their trunks.
Many shops have disclaimers on their service tickets stating they “are not responsible for items lost or stolen from a vehicle being serviced.” Although this may seem rash, it is the only way the shop has to protect itself from customers who equate their cars with a lock box.
