Objectifying her subjects, she sometimes combines her portrayal of them with imaginative, surrealistic features that may be humorous or symbolic. She accomplishes this without intruding herself into the paintings.
Her courage in painting the fantastic realistically, simply and elegantly *^sets up a tension that demands attention.
I’m not sure that what I have said explains anything or illuminates Robin’s work. Talking about her art is like making a perfect novel into a movie — it is, to say the least, gratuitous. A case in point is the small portrait of her daughter, Ruth. It is a likeness of a much loved child at a particular time in her life. A few simple things are there: the child’s beautiful face, her defining hat, her stand-up collar and simple dress. Through accretion and elimination, Robin shows us what matters.
Music played and sung by the Rappahannock Quintet contributed significantly to the festive atmosphere of the opening reception. Those who missed this event can see the exhibition between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. until April 26. For information call (540) 672-3900.
