RCHS baseball and softball teams are 0 and 2 in district competition following losses to Central Friday and Strasburg Monday..
Their coaches are far from giving up.
Of the Central game baseball Coach Don Hackney said, “It was an awful game all around.” On the positive side his three pitchers, Jon Digges, Tommy Settle and Willie Eastham “only allowed one earned run apiece.” However the team lost 12 to 1, and Central got its 12 points on five hits and six Panther errors.
The only Panther run came in the fourth inning when Tommy Settle reached base on a Central error. Willie Eastham walked, and both moved up. Then Jason Brown got an infield single and Tommy scored.
In the fifth inning catcher Griffin Ward got a base hit on a line drive but was left on basest the end of the inning.
Against Strasburg, Coach Hackney saw considerable improvement although the Panthers fell 9 to 0.
“The score didn’t indicate the game,” he said. “We were in it until the fourth inning. It was a major improvement from Friday. I think there are brighter days ahead. We’ll become competitive. There is no question about that.”
In the second inning Brady Wolfe hit a single hobbled by the Strasburg fielder and reached second. In the seventh inning Griffin-Ward had a single. The Panthers left six runners on base.
Coach Carl Payne said his softball team’s major weakness is in throwing strikes. Central defeated the Panthers 20 to 3, and Strasburg won 23 to 18.
Against Central Courtney Welch hit a two-run homer. Kylene Wolfe, Apgie Atkins, Lauren Sharp and Julie Atkins all got singles.
