The only division with new winners was the junior optimum time division — and in this, as at Casanova, one pair of juniors from the host hunt jumped around the course to an uncontested win in that division. Rappahannock teenagers Laura Hitchcock and Darby Kirby rode Woodstock and Sparkling Burgundy.
Although the two hunts didn’t plan to run identical paces, a “new and improved” Rappahannock hunter pace course had many similarities to Casanova’s. It was a little more than two miles long, with nine fences, and like the Casanova event incorporated some of the timber jumps from Saturday’s races. Rappahannock^ pace is held at Thornton Hill Farm, owned by the Fletcher family.
It is the site of the hunt’s kennels, as well as its point-topoint, and horsemen know it as the mountainside course. “The mountains scare some of the contestants away because our hunter pace is so early in the season,” explained pace organizer Julie Williamson. “People
