A half hour before the sun appears over the mountains, I hear a sweet, tentative song of a Carolina Wren. It’s not the robust and rollicking song we will hear later but a few experimental notes a bit of tuning up — greeting the day in late February. The sky to the east is streaked with the palest of pink and orange.
Days are longer now. It seems that light is being added at the beginning more than at the end but this is just my perception, my personal interpretation — tinged with wishing — of the advance to spring. Officially, March 20 is the first day of the second season when the world changes so imperceptibly at its beginnings, testing us with its tentativeness. We always want more. At any rate, I do. I am impatient for greenness.
Only a few weeks stand between now and the time when there will be exactly twelve hours of darkness and twelve of light. From there on spring gathers momentum as it progresses to the longest day in June. It is like a
