many newly arrived and singing birds. Such a profusion of wild flowers! I cannot possibly give each Trout Lily, Bloodroot, and unfurling, umbrellalike May Apple leaf the kind of attention each deserves.

Now I am impatient. There are signs. Chickadees are chasing each other through the maple branches with more on their minds than a sunflower seed. Yesterday a pair of Tufted Titmice gave a thorough and minute inspection to a new nest box I placed on a fence post outside the window of my writing place. It seemed to me they checked out the slant of the roof, the size of the entrance hole, provision for drainage, and even how the box is attached to the post.

Crows are rowing through the air in companionable pairs. I have even seen two vultures soaring close to each other, one gracefully slipping under and then over another. Even vultures court! I suppose that to a female vulture a male can look enticing though to me, up close, they are so far from beauty as to be downright ugly. Vultures are certainly masters of the air as they float effortlessly in it, riding on rising columns of warm air.

Yesterday, in Rectortown to visit David and Elsa Rosenthal, I found the ground around their house covered by tiny, ruby red flowers of the Red Maple, a splendid maple is actually incorporated into the house David designed.
