The paving of the library parking lot was the main topic of discussion at the monthly meeting of the Rappahannock County Library Board last week.
When the board had first looked into paving the parking lot, five to six years ago, they had been given an estimate of $18,000 to $20,000, said Franklin Warner, vice president. The board at that time decided to put the issue on hold. When the Building and Grounds Committee re-looked at it this past year, Mr. Warner said, they added about $5,000 to their estimate based on previous figures per foot they had received.
They then had a meeting to solicit bids for the paving job. Three companies attended the meeting and they received one bid. The bid was for over $47,000. The discrepancy in the estimate and the bid was due to the fact that the cost of regrading and putting in culverts in addition to government specifications for paving, was not added into the original cost estimate.
“We wanted a first rate, job and that’s what the bid reflected,” said Roberta Anderson, president.
Mr. Warner said the committee had decided the issue needs to be reexamined and new recommendations must be made to address the need for paving. The committee, which met in an early meeting before the board’s meeting, recommended to the board that it reject the bid with thanks to the contractor for their efforts and give the committee more time to evaluate what needs to be done and how to proceed.
