A grassed waterway is one of several methods of helping to control erosion. This practice applies to areas where there are natural drainage ways or low areas in the land. One way to keep land from eroding into a gully and preventing damage to equipment is to keep those problem areas in grass.
Run-off from hills that is spreading over the land and causing erosion
and making it difficult to work could be funneleft into a grass waterway.
In some cases spring planting may be delayed due to the standing water in that part of the field. One of the best ways to remove the water would be to construct or use the natural drainage ways to handle the required run-off for that particular site.
Most waterways are built to be one foot to two feet deep and 30 feet wide allowing the flow of water to concentrate into one spot. At the outlet the run-off is safely removed from the field without causing any erosion problems.
After the excavation, the area should be seeded with 60 pounds of Kentucky 31 fescue and acre, lime and fertilize and also mulch with straw or hay to help ensure a good stand.
