Connie Mack had been in his 50’s when that kid Babe Ruth broke in with the Red Sox. He had managed against TV Cobb and against Jackie Robinson. And I realize now that when Connie Mack was a kid like me he had seen old folks who were born in, say, 1770.
I have seen Connie Mack and he saw people who were around before the American Revolution, people who had perhaps seen George Washington. So that means there are only two degrees of separation between G.W. and myself. All of this makes me understand that I am getting older and that this is a very young country indeed.
