inch in length. Male fireflies have wings and are relatively good fliers. The females, on the other hand are not good fliers and some are completely wingless.
The wingless females and firefly larvae (larvae is the stage of development between an egg and a grown-up firefly when it looks like a worm) are often called glowworms.
The adults are short-lived and eat little or no food. They are nocturnal in habit, resting on the leaves of cool, damp bushes during the day. The female lays a hundred, or more eggs at the base of a plant in a damp, moist place, generally near a stream. The larvae hatch and live for one or two years in the soil.
We all know that fireflies light up, but how? And why? Not to get too technical but just enough to explain this interesting occurrence, fireflies emit a light from their abdomen as a result of oxygen from the air and two chemical substances.
The chemicals are luciferin and luciferase. Luciferin is an organic compound that is acted upon by the enzyme (a protein that causes chemical reactions to occur) luciferase.
