Senior, Jenny Waters, was the recipient of the RCHS Best Athlete Award, one of the top awards given out in an evening with many accolades on Wednesday, May 30, at the Spring Sports Banquet.
RCHS Principal, Joe Perrine and Athletic Director, Jon Smythe assisted the various team coaches in presenting these awards.
Mark Russell won the Neil Burke Memorial Award for the senior athlete who best exemElifies
“perseverance in his igh school sports career.” The award was provided by Jonathan Watson, a classmate of Neil’s, who wanted to honor Neil who lost his life in an auto accident. Track Coach Ann Spieker remembered Neil Burke who ran cross country and track as an athlete that was always out there trying his best despite adversity or personal challenges.
Other top awards went to Kirk Davis who was honored with the Rappahannock News Award for a senior athlete who is a solid citizen, good athlete, and all around top notch representative of the school and community. In accepting the award for her son, Patricia Davis said, “His father would be so proud.”
A final top award for sportsmanship went to junior, Phillip Thomas who successfully played in a sport for all three seasons. Phillip was a top contender for RCHS last fall in cross country, a real contributor in basketball during the winter season, and made the All State Track Team in the 800 meter run last weekend. Phillip did all of this with a smile and over came a leg injury this spring
