Distressed insects almost always attract insects of the same species, bees will come to assist other bees. If fireflies are caught in a spider web they will begin distress flashing to warn others. They will do the same thing if they are caught and put in a jar.
Here is a neat trick to try. you can attract the male firefly with a tiny flashlight.
The male will flash every five seconds and he makes a dip, kind like a “j” painted in light. Wait exactly two seconds after their flash to give an answering flash.
Males will come to you looking for a mate.
When fireflies abound, catching them is a favorite summer pastime. It is one of the few- activities that bind the generations together, even today kids will leave their video games and go out and catch fireflies.
Enjoy this truly remarkable creature, but remember to release the fireflies from the jar.
