Smute who was born about 1596, probably in England. He was a boat wright by trade and sailed for Virginia in the mid 1600’s after procuring a job here, settling in York County. From York County the family moved into Charles County, Md. and several generations later descendants moved back into Virginia. By the late 1700’s an ancestor was in Prince William County. In 1829 their greatgreat-granHfather was born in Culpeper County, and in 1853 was married in Rappahannock.
The aunts, Florine Nicholson, now a resident of Culpeper Health Care Center, Dolly Nicholson of Woodville, and Louise Tarman of near Martinsburg, W.Va. attended the affair. These three had been the only mother some of the Smoot siblings remembered.
