Virginia where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnical Institute.
He was past master of Casanova Hunt. Captain Smith was a member of American Legion in Luray.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Virginia Duncan Smith of Washington and two daughters, Lee Smith Dillard of Greencastle, Pa. and Mollie Smith Snead and her husband, Rayner of Lynchburg.
Additional survivors include a sister, Mildred Smith Litsey of Hampton; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother, David B. Smith Jr.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday, June 1 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington with Rev. William Parish officiating.
Interment followed in Culpeper National Cemetery with honors provided by the American Legion Post #330 and the V.F.W. Post #2524.

Riverton N. “Zig” Clegg, 82, of Winchester died Friday, May 25 at his residence.
Funeral services were conducted on May 30 at Rosedale Baptist Church by Dr. Ken H. Smith. Burial was in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mr. Clegg was born June 6, 1918, in Rappahannock County, son of the late Samuel and Ada Alexander Clegg. He retired in 1974 as an iron worker at Atlas Machine Shop and was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church.
He was the husband of the late Ethel L. Johnson Clegg.
Surviving are three sons, Eppa Clegg and Eugene Clegg, both of Winchester and Edgar Clegg of Stephens City; four sisters, Louise Wright of Delaplane, Mary Grier of Culpeper, Roberta VanFossen of Littlestown, Pa. and Golda Bishop of Colonial Heights; five brothers, Ulysses Clegg of Browntown, David Clegg of Hanover, Pa., Charles Clegg of Augusta, W.Va., Samuel Clegg of The Plains and Albert
