But why do fireflies give off light? Male fireflies have certain patterns of light flashes that they use to attract females. The females normally flash their lights back in response to the males. Just how you and I talk to communicate, the fireflies flash their lights. And while other insects

can produce light, fireflies are the

only insects that can flash their . lights on and off in distinct sig|

nals. I The ones we see flying around I are the males of the species. He is f doing a mating dance to entice

females. Some females do not fly,

they sit in brush or bushes and respond by flashing their lights. This is how they find each other.

Different species fly at different times and give off different signals.

Another reason for the light is that it tells birds and other insects that fireflies are not a good meal. Like the orange color of a monarch butterfly, or the yellow stripes on a wasp, the light on the end of a firefly lets predators know to avoid eating them. The chemicals that make the light are bitter and birds do not like to eat them.

A third reason fireflies light up is to warn other fireflies of danger.
