Rapp vs Amelia
After several rain cancellations, the Lady Panthers finally got their chance for the Regional Championship game in on Sunday, June 3 with Amelia High School. Our young team with eight freshman, two sophomores, two juniors, and only one senior got off the bus with their coach, Jon Smythe all determined to bring home the regional trophy and a new banner for the Rapp gym as Region B Champions.
The Cinderella team from Rappahannock had already by now upset two number one teams from other Districts. Now facing Amelia County who had upset Bull Run District’s number two seed Brentsville then tumbled Wilson Memorial who had upset defending state champion, Manassas Park, Rapp had another tough challenge.
In the first inning, Gwen Johnson came up with a big double ripped to the left field fence and ignited the spark that set the Panthers on fire. Johnson stole second, and then came home on a passed ball to score the first run of the game.
Johnson scored again in the third inning, with a lead off walk, followed by a stolen base, and scored on an RBI bunt by Ryisha Cook. Cook stole third and Sharp brought her home a hard single to left. Sharp advanced to second on the unsuccessful throw home to catch Cook, stole third, and came home on an errant throw trying to catch her at third.
