most sad and pathetic deaths in the Drug War are the children, aspiring to be doctors and teachers, who are unwittingly gunned down in the crossfire of a drug dispute, or shot as they lay in bed, or sit at their window doing homework. With deepest apologies to your friend—and to some of mine for the same reason—I would rather see the gutters and alley’s filled with addicts dead from legally available drugs than one more innocent child, grandmother or law enforcement officer gunned down in cold blood. At least, if drugs were legal, only those using them would die.
If good quality drug treatment were readily available, thousands like Ben’s friend’s sister might also be alive today. Hundreds of thousands of addicts would readily sign up for treatment immediately. . . but we have decided to expend virtually all our resources on interdiction and incarceration.
