Brittany Thornhill and Zach Corbin combined efforts to produce a professional quality device to use on a zip line. Their efforts are through a project setup by Mr. Ron Vickers, Drafting Instructor and Mr. John Norman, Welding/Maintenance Instructor at Rappahannock County High School.

It started when Mr. Vickers saw a zip line device that could be purchased from Amazon.com. Two models were available costing from about $40 for a standard model to over $80 for the deluxe edition. This occurred after the first of the year and the Technical Drawing class was about to begin the dimensioning unit.

So the final drawing exercise for this unit became a design problem where each student was to decide the shape of the two plates and locations of holes for the pulleys. “I wanted to give my students, a real life problem where they had to utilize size and location dimensions and also notes to make the drawing communicate to the person manufacturing the product,” said Mr. Vickers.
