Backyard harvest
Bill and Aleta's quest for grape growing and winemaking stemmed not only from heritage, but also from time spent while Bill was in the Navy, stationed in California.
While visiting Gemello Vineyards in Moffett Field, California, Bill recalls seeing a photo of “Grandpa Gemello” at age 96, still crushing grapes. It just so happened that Bill was visiting the vineyards on what would have been Grandpa Gemello's 100th birthday.
“It was an inspiration,” Bill said, ‘letting me know there was something I could do after my second retirement.”
The Gadino's first backyard harvest of Zinfandel in 1983 resulted in a product both enjoyed, as did friends and family.
By 1984, the family moved to Virginia, and with the desire to continue winemaking, arranged to have grapes shipped from California.
