Miranda Hope provides career counseling at the Rappahannock County High School through a program called Next Steps. Hope helps parents and students wade through the myriad of steps in filing for financial aid for colleges, filling out applications and looking for scholarships for the college bound.
Hope recently took a group of young students on a field trip of sorts to learn firsthand about other opportunities after high school — like pursuing a career in the trades.

welding studio
On Tuesday, June 21st, I took juniors Carter Bruce, Jeremy Miller, and Bob Pearson on a tour of local vocational opportunities. First stop was Rick Nawrocki’s welding studio on Rte 211 at Massie’s Comer. Rick showed us his shop and talked about the pros and cons of being self-employed.
“The customer becomes your employer,” he said. “But, I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Rick believes in doing a job right the first time.
“When something leaves my shop, I don’t want to see it come back again. And I never have.” He emphasized the importance of being a craftsman, and advised the young men to work hard in school and in life. “And
