Our last stop was the “Open House” for Germanna Community College’s Automotive Program at the George Washington Carver Piedmont Technical Center in Rapidan, Virginia, 6 miles south of Culpeper. Brent Wilson runs two yearlong programs there: Automotive Diagnostician and Automotive Technician. He assured us that anyone with training who wants a mechanic job can get one.
“The country needs 300,000 more mechanics, and these skills translate to other jobs as well, on tractors, bridges, anything mechanical.” He told us about scholarships and Governor Warner’s “Pathways to Industry” program, through which many high school graduates can attend the program for free. The students were impressed with the facility and, of course, with the two dragsters on the shop floor, each sporting a high performance V-8, with enough horses for a stampede.
