For Morris, it was a Hobson’s choice: Either run Lord Kenneth, Miles Ahead and Chinese Whisper in the same race, or give up the opportunity to run on good ground on an inviting course over testing, but not too tall, fences. With the targeted $50,000 Virginia Gold Cup looming, just four weeks away, possibilities were running out.
Morris took the plunge.
Making up fully half of the sixhorse field, tiie Kinross trio settled into familiar, routines at the outset. Chinese Whisper, red-hot Carl Rafter up, scooted to the lead, followed by a well-settled Miles Ahead, Kinross’ stable jockey Chris Read aboard. Dawdler Lord Kenneth, Jeff Murphy up, was content in third or fourth while Tom Kirlin’s pair, Pride of Dublin and I Am, raced with him midfield. First-timer High Watermark, Jonathan Thomas up, stayed close in touch with the pack.
Chinese Whisper put as many as eight lengths between him and the field, but Miles Ahead nibbled the numbers along the backstretch the final time, drawing even at the last and pulling away in the stretch. Chinese Whisper rallied, but Miles Ahead scored by a length and a half, with Chinese Whisper second; Lord Kenneth closed to finish a clear third.
Miles Ahead was bred in Pennsylvania by Derry Meeting Farm and Jonathan Sheppard. The son of Unaccounted For (inbred 4x4 to Northern Dancer) produced four wins on the flat and one over hurdles for his breeders before being claimed for Kinross for $35,000 out of a winning race on the flat in 2004 at Saratoga.
