Hospice of the Rapidan to
offer free seminars for
Virginia Advanced Directives
Hospice of the Rapidan will host three free seminars on “advance medical directives* on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 18. Advance medical directives are instructions people prepare in advance regarding medical care they want to receive, or don’t want to receive; in the event they cannot speak for themselves. This is an outstanding opportunity for members of our community to learn about this important aspect of personal planning that is often overlooked.
Advance Medical Directives include living wills (written instructions to doctors and hospitals), durable posers of attorney (authorizing a family member or loved one to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to) and other arrangements. They are easier to put in place than many people believe, are not expensive, and can save families a great deal of anguish when done properly. No lawyer or notary is usually needed.
The seminars are presented in association with the Virginia Association for Hospices, the Committee to Establish Virginia Advanced Directives Day and the Virginia State Bar, Health Law Section. They will be held at Oak Springs of Warrenton, 614 Hastings Lane, Warrenton from 4 to 6 p.m., the Orange County Nursing Home, 120 Dogwood Lane, Orange from 2 to 4 p.m., and at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation, 602 Madison Road, Culpeper from 4 to 6 p.m. Health care professionals and local attorneys will speak about advance medical directives and will be available to answer your questions for free. Advance medical directive forms that meet the requirements of Virginia law will also be available. All members of the public are welcome. Reservations are appreciated but not necessary. Following Benjamin Franklin’s adage that “nothing is certain but death and taxes,” The Virginia State Bar’s Health Law Section has started an initiative to make the day after tax day “Virginia Advance Directives Day” in order to increase awareness of this important issue and to make it easier for people to learn more about it. Hospice of the Rapidan is grateful to the law firms of Somerville, Sellers & Wilkinson, Ltd. of Orange, Davies Barrell Will Lewellyn & Edwards LLC of Culpeper, and Culin, Sharp, Autry and Day, RL.C. with offices in Warrenton and Culpeper. Attorneys from these firms will be present at each of the seminars to answer questions and help people arrange for putting an advance medical directive in place if they wish .
Hospice of the Rapidan is a licensed, nonprofit hospice organization providing skilled medical care and compassionate support to terminally ill patients and their families in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock and surrounding counties. The event is Basket Bingo. That’s right, the famous and much-desired Longaberger baskets are being given away as bingo prizes that night in Amissville.
You will play 20 regular bingo games for the admission fee of $20.00 in advance — $25.00 at the door. A Longaberger™ basket will be awarded each bingo winner.
In addition, there will be five JACKPOT bingo games. Play those for $5.00 each.
