Norris’ commitment to bis students doesn’t end with his band classes. He willingly works with other teachers to enhance special projects. When Swanson’s seventh grade enacts a Civil War simulation for history class, Norris forms a band to play appropriate accompanying music and march out onto the field. When teachers recently led students through a reenactment of the voyage of the Titanic, Norris provided the shipboard jazz ensemble.
This year, Norris’ band will supply music for the Harlem Renaissance Festival. Under his direction, Swanson musical groups have provided entertainment for rededication ceremonies, new student orientations, and open houses in addition to the numerous concerts and festivals they perform each year. This year, his students will play on a Broadway stage as well as atop the flight deck of the USS Intrepid with the New York City skyline in the background.
